Kong Stuffing: Chickpea Stew

With its hearty mix of potatoes, ham chunks, and chickpeas (garbanzo beans), chickpea stew is a popular fall dish with the humans at our house. With just a few tweaks it makes a perfect savory Kong stuffing to share with your dogs!

Chickpea Stew Kong Stuffing Recipe

  • canned chickpeas
  • boiled potatoes, diced
  • ham chunks
  • beef broth
  1. Rinse the chickpeas and ham chunks. Mix the diced potato, chickpeas, and ham together.
  2. Stuff a piece of potato in the small hole at the end of the Kong. Place the Kong upside down in a coffee mug and fill with the mixture.
  3. Top off the Kong with the beef broth. Leave Kong upright in mug and place in the freezer.
  4. Serve to your dog once frozen. Frozen Kongs can be messy so choose your location wisely!

Ingredient Notes

Chickpeas should be unsalted or the lowest sodium canned version you can find. Always rinse the chickpeas before serving.

Potatoes should have the skins removed before boiling, allowed to cool, then diced into squares. Russet potatoes work great for this recipe.

Ham tends to be very high in sodium and preservatives, so choose the lowest sodium version you can find. Ham should be used only as an occasional treat and not as a regular part of your dog’s diet.

Beef broth should be plain and unsalted.
